The Creation of Allods

The story of Allods Online starts on a planet called Sarnaut. Its largest continent, Yul, has been inhabited by many remarkable civilizations: The Elven kingdom of Airin in the northwest, the Zem tribes in the southern desert,The Orcs of the eastern lands, and the migrating Aro tribe. Aro were led by the Great Mage Tensess, who brought them to the ruins of the old June kingdom, the first kingdom of humans that disappeared under a mysterious curse. In the June ruins, Aro waged war to the orcs. Under Tensess’ leadership, they were victorious, and the Kanian civilization was established.

The Great Mage Nezeb proved himself as another great hero of this war. Both mages, battle-scarred and hungry for power, strived for leadership of the Kanian people. Tensess emerged victorious and banished Nezeb to the deserts of Zem, where Nezeb become leader of a nomadic tribe called Ugra. With a new army, Nezeb launched his troops upon the Kanian lands, conquering a portion of them. This victory allowed Nezeb to form an independent and strong state of Xadagan, spurring an enmity spanning millennia.

In the year of 4015 of the Old Era, the Great Cataclysm struck Sarnaut. The planet was shattered and allods, islands out of the planet’s remnants, emerged. The Allods floated in the Astral – magical substance surrounding Sarnaut’s remains. Millions perished until the Great Mages discovered a way to sustain life on these allods, ensuring the survival of civilization. The cause of the Great Cataclysm remains a mystery despite the Conclave of the Great Mages’ attempts to deal with the consequences of the disaster.

Conclave of the Great Mages

The Conclave of the Great Mages has been formed millennia ago by the wisest Sarnaut mages. Although they were bound to the Rules of the Conclave, they could access arcane and esoteric lore available only to the Conclave. In the third millennium of the Old Era, the Great Mage Skrakan led the Council. He mentored a number of mages – Tensess and Nezeb, his most prodigious pupils, were among them. 500 years after the first confrontation between Tensess’ Kania and Nezeb’s Xadagan Skrakan brought the warring Great Mages to heel. Yet, Tensess and Nezeb’s influence grew too large for Skrakan to control, and a schism split the Conclave. From that point onwards, there was no Conclave – only the Mages of Kania and the Mages of Xadagan left. During the endless war in the eighth century of the New Era, two opposing factions were formed: the League, led by the Kanians, and the Empire, led by the Xadaganians.

Aftermath of the Cataclysm

A remarkable discovery made by curious Gibberlings enabled ship-borne exploration of the Astral, heralding the Era of Astral Travels. This new technology spurred the war between Kanian and Xadagan to new heights, as the governments were now able to siege allods without the assistance of the Great Mages. Astral protection required a rare resource – meteoric iron extracted from the depths of the Astral. Unlucky for the Imperial Allod of Kirah, a large and valuable iron meteor once crashed onto its lands.

In the year 909 of the New Era, a League army invaded Kirah, spurring an Empire counterattack of the Arisen, orcs, and Xadaganians. Kirah was a powder keg, and the allod quickly became drenched in blood. Yet, on a fateful night of 910, strange portals opened on many allods spanning the entire Astral, and endless legions of ravenous demons came into the world to kill and destroy. To make things worse, the Astral started consuming entire allods along with their Great Mage guardians. Many other allods has been further fragmented, becoming much smaller than their original forms. Yasker and Eniel, leaders of the Empire and the League, ordered their armies to evacuate as the demons flooded Kirah. Yasker opened a portal to Igsh allod to save his army, but only a small fraction was able to get through before the portal ceased. The remnants of the Empire army were slaughtered by the Astral Demons. The League army attempted to flee on their Astral ships, but only a single ship managed to evade the demons. Soon after the invasion, many allods have been destroyed completely, killing millions of people. Smaller invasions followed, but they never reached this scale of atrocity. With an implacable mutual foe, the League and Empire put aside their differences and established an uneasy alliance. For the next 15 years, they have been waiting for the next invasion, but it never happened.

In the year 957, after decades of non-aggression, a new war erupted between the League and the Empire. A fleet of Imperial Astral ships build using new technologies attacked the League lands. The League was not prepared for such an onslaught and had to retreat, ceding their allods to the Empire. Due to the Empire Astral blockade, the League resorted to travelling through portals until they managed to successfully capture an Imperial ship. Elven mages reverse engineered the Empire’s technology, allowing the League to meet the Empire on their own terms in the year 962. As the war intensified, demon attacks grew stronger. At the same time, a disturbing new cult began to spread across the allods. Treacherous groups of the Arisen, humans, and orcs greeted the demons warmly, seeing them as a punishment for allod inhabitants. By serving and assisting the demons on their unknown mission, these cultists believed they could ensure their survival.

In the year of 965, Skrakan came across a book called “The Revelation of Tka-rik”. The book revealed that the astral demons were evil spirits from another world whose fundamental purpose was destruction. Tka-rik had unleashed the demons during his experiment over the June civilization while researching new sources of magic. He discovered that the only way to end the invasion was sealing the gates to the demonic world. Skrakan revealed this information to everyone, temporarily halting the war between League and Empire. A year later, Skrakan signed a peace treaty with Nezeb. Scouts discovered the location of June gates, and the Great Mages and armies left to seal them.

After capturing the allods where the gates were located, the Great Mages finally succeeded in sealing the gates. It was a Pyrrhic victory, though. As the gates closed, a massive Astral storm swept into existence, wiping out both the armies and the Great Mages. Only a handful of ships managed to escape, bringing news of the victory darkened by the sacrifice.

The loss of Skrakan and Nezeb left a void in the League and Empire’s hierarchies. The League has been ruled by the Conclave of Great Mages. Aidenus, the Great Mage of Kvatoh, took command of the League. The transition of power in the Empire was not that smooth, erupting into a bloody confrontation. Two Great Mages fought for leadership: Gurluxor, an old and experienced mage who still was a mere shadow of Nezeb, and Yasker, the young hero of the Kvatoh war.

Yasker parlayed with the Arisen and Orcs, promising equal rights in return for their support. They pledged their loyalty and Gurluxor has been overwhelmed quickly, fled to his allod and was never found. Victorious, Yasker proclaimed himself a Great Mage of the Empire and fulfilled his promise to the Arisen and orcs.

The Astral was now a dangerous place, harboring demons and other terrible creatures. Still, travels and trade flourished, but with the growing economy a new threat arose. Astral Pirates preyed on independent traders, as well as on League and Empire ships. Meanwhile, the alliance between League and Empire crumbled, eroded by overpopulation, diminishing resources, and ideological differences. A new war has been declared in the year 1008, when a new allod has been discovered between Kvatoh, home of the League, and Igsh, central allod of the Empire. This new allod has been named a Holy Land.
